What is the most valuable Pokémon card?

When buying Pokémon cards, people usually buy the ones they think will make them money. The Pokemon trading cards game is played by millions of people all over the world. In fact, the card game has a lot of fans.

The most valuable Pokémon cards in the world are of a particular type. These cards are very rare and valuable. These cards are also called the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) card, a certification that ensures the authenticity of a card. A Professional Sports Authenticator grade 10 Pikachu Illustrator card is the most valuable Pokémon card as of August 2022.

Pikachu Illustrator is the only PSA grade 10 card known to exist. PSA 10 grades indicate perfect condition. Logan Paul, a social media personality and professional boxer owned this card. By Guinness World Records, he paid $5.275 million for the card.

For $1.275 million, Paul purchased a PSA grade 9 Pikachu Illustrator card in June 2021. The boxer Logan Paul bought the PSA grade 10 card for $5.275 million after trading this card for $4 million.

When Paul appeared at WrestleMania 38 in April 2022, Guinness said he wore his PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator card as a necklace around his neck.

What makes pokemon cards valuable?

Since the recession, trading cards have become more valuable, with some fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars. Trading cards are generally valued according to two factors:

  • The card’s rarity
  • The item’s condition

Collectors’ willingness to pay depends on these two factors, which explains why some cards fetch unbelievable prices.

Some people are so serious about collecting their collections that they will pay millions just to buy one card. These cards can be cards that were originally released years ago or cards that are rare and only available at specific shows or auctions. Some people are even willing to pay outrageous prices just to look at the card they collected. The chances of you making money are high if you collect the most valuable new pokemon cards.

Check out this list of valuable pokemon cards, according to Dicebreaker:

1.Pikachu Illustrator

Value: $5.275 million sold in July 2023

Pikachu Illustrator was originally the most valuable Japanese pokemon card. It was given to winners of a promotional contest held by CoroCoro Comic in 1997 and 1998. 39 copies were awarded to the winners, while two were later discovered in 2020. However, on only one Pokémon card, the top of the card says “Illustrator” instead of “Trainer.”

Pokemon card collectors consider the Pikachu Illustrator to be the Holy Grail. Unfortunately, only one PSA 10 is known to exist in 2022, and it was bought in July 2021 for $5,275,000 by YouTuber Logan Paul. The card was acquired in exchange for a PSA 9 version worth $1,275,000, plus another $4 million.

Paul’s jaw-dropping trade, however, came after the card was already very valuable, with a PSA 9 selling for $195,000 in 2019, a PSA 7 selling for $375,000 in 2021, and a PSA 7 selling for $900,000 before the private sale.

2.1999 First Edition Shadowless Holographic Charizard #4

Value- Sold in March 2022 for $420,000

Since its release in 1999, Shiny Charizard has been one of the most popular cards in the Pokémon series. It is, without a doubt, one of the most expensive cards. Due to its shadowless variant, the Shiny Charizard has always been in high demand. It stands out in the absence of a shadow under its fire-breathing dragon form.

In October 2020, retired rapper Logic purchased a mint-condition first-edition shadowless holographic PSA 10 Charizard at auction for a whopping $220,574, breaking the record for the already valuable card.

In November 2020, a copy of the Shadowless Charizard was auctioned for $350,100, breaking the record once again – Goldin Auctions claimed the figure to be the highest amount paid for any Pokemon card to date – as soon as a copy was sold for $369,000 a month later.

As a result of that record-breaking sale, Shadowless Charizard in Gem Mint 10 condition continues to be one of the most valuable Pokémon card ever, with another sale fetching $300,000 in January 2021.

In March 2022, a PSA 10 Charizard sold for $420,000 broke that record once more. Currently, it’s the third-highest price paid ever for any Pokémon card, as well as the most expensive shadowless Charizard ever sold

1999 First Edition Shadowless Holographic Charizard #4

3.Pokémon Blastoise #009/165R Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Hologram

Value-  In January 2021, it sold for $360,000

In 1998, Wizards of the Coast created the Pokémon card as a presentation piece to convince Nintendo of Japan executives to let them handle the TCG’s English-language release. One year later, in 1999, the game would make its international debut.

Only this one has been seen publicly among the two Blastoise ‘Presentation’ cards that were produced. Additionally, CGC has graded the card as NM/Mint+ 8.5, indicating that it’s in nearly perfect condition for a 20-plus-year-old card.

In January 2021, this Blastoise card suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards ever after it was sold at auction for $360,000 (£266,000).

4.Black Star Ishihara Signed GX Promo Card

Value-Sold for $247,230 in April 2021

It is the latest most valuable new Pokemon card from the game to sell for thousands of dollars: a card depicting and autographed by the president of The Pokémon Company went for almost $250,000 at auction.

During the 2017 birthday celebration of Tsunekazu Ishihara, the card featuring the executive was given to Pokémon Company employees.

As a producer of Pokémon Red and Green, Ishihara played a vital role in the development of video games. In 2016, he also contributed to the development of Pokémon Go, the augmented reality mobile app that exploded in popularity.

In 2017 P.M. SM Black Star #TPCi01 Tsunekazu Ishihara Signed Pokémon GX Promo Card, Ishihara is depicted holding Rotom, an electric-ghost Pokémon. With a starting price of $500, the Ishihara Pokémon card ended up selling for $247,230. The card was graded at NM 7 – meaning ‘near mint condition – by card grader PSA. The autograph was graded at 9 (out of 10).

5.Kangaskhan-Holo #115, Family Event Trophy Card

Value-Sold for $150,100 in October 2020

As part of the 1998 Parent/Child Mega Battle tournament held in Japan, this valuable Pokémon card was given to participants. One of the most valuable Pokémon cards sold in recent years is Kangaskhan-Holo #115, Family Event Trophy Card Graded Gem Mint 10 by PSA, which was sold on eBay in October for more than $150,000.

In the two decades since the card first appeared, only 46 copies have ever been graded, and only three have been publicly sold, according to auction house PWCC. PWCC called the card worthy of a museum when it sold it at its October 2020 auction, describing it as the third-rarest Pokémon card in the world.

6.1st Edition Neo Genesis Lugia

Value-  Sold in May 2021 for $144,300

In the entire Pokémon series, Lugia is one of the most iconic and popular Pokémon, starring on the cover of Pokémon Silver on the Game Boy and its remake on the Nintendo DS. Unfortunately, several errors and misprints were included in the early runs of the Neo Genesis Pokémon TCG set, making the Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holo Lugia #9 Pokémon card is one of the rare valuable pokemon cards to grade, according to auction house PWCC. Despite later corrections, several cards from the expansion remain more common in their earlier uncorrected form.

Until May 2021, only 41 Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holo Lugia #9 cards were graded by PSA as Gem Mint 10 condition, according to PWCC, with just three receiving a Beckett Grading Services 10 Pristine rating. Nevertheless, the rarity of the Lugia makes it almost as valuable as the legendary first-edition Charizard when it comes to Pokémon cards.

A Pokémon card also fetches a high auction price due to its popularity and rarity. According to reports, a first-edition Neo Genesis Lugia graded at PSA 10 sold in October 2020 for $50,000, while a BGS 10 Pristine copy sold for $144,000 in May 2021. In every sense of the word, this is a legendary card.

.1st Edition Neo Genesis Lugia

7.2006 Pokémon World Championships Promo No. 2 Trainer

Value-  In February 2021, it sold for $110,100

Trainer trophy cards are scarce, with only a few copies made of 2006’s No. 2 Trainer. Pokémon World Championships finalists received the trophy card in August 2006. Still, they had to earn entry to the tournament by collecting enough points to qualify and then make it to the finals of their divisions in order to claim the card.

There are just three copies thought to exist of the 2006 No. 2 Trainer. Unfortunately, its rarity also means its price is high, as a mint 9 graded by PSA went for over $110,000 in February 2021.

8.1999 Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer

Value –  Sold in July 2020 for $90,000

Even though you’re unlikely to have heard of Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer or even seen a copy in person, it is among the rarest Pokémon cards of all time.

In Tokyo, Japan, in 1999, finalists in the Secret Super Battle tournament received the No. 1 Trainer holographic promotional card. Although it shares a similar name with the 2002 World Championship No. 1 Trainer, players had to win a regional tournament before competing in the competition’s finals, held in a secret location. The prize was the No. 1 Trainer card, which entitles them to the finals.

One of the rarest Pokémon cards is believed to have been produced in just seven copies since only seven regional tournaments were held. However, in July 2020, a flawless copy sold for $90,000 at auction in July 2020, and 6 of the ultra-rare cards were certified by PSA. This prestigious organization grades trading cards up to the highest level of Gem Mint 10, one of the highest grades.

9.1999 Pokémon Japanese Promo Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind

Value –Sold for $65,100 in October 2020

As one of the most valuable Pokémon sets, Tropical Wind contains 12 promo cards issued to promote the 1999 Tropical Mega Battle, which was the precursor to the Pokémon World Championships.

It sold for as much as $65,100 in PSA Gem Mint 10 condition in October 2020, the most recent record-breaking sale of this particular Tropical Mega Battle promo card, a 1999 Japanese-language copy of Tropical Wind. As estimated by PSA, the ultra-rare card is worth $148,482, making it one of the most expensive Pokémon cards ever created.

10.1996 Pokémon Japanese Base Set No Rarity Symbol Holo Venusaur

Value- Sold for $55,000 in November 2021

Today’s most valuable Pokémon cards are from the first editions of the trading card game released in the 1990s.

In the game’s first print run in 1996, the Venusaur Pokémon card was among the rarest cards. And few Pokémon cards are rarer than the No Rarity Pokémon cards. In addition, only five copies of the Bulbasaur evolution – famous for appearing in the original video game Pokémon Green – have been graded at a perfect Gem-Mint 10 by PSA. Making a flawless copy of the card extremely rare.

The No Rarity Venusaur card commands a high price. But a copy sold in November 2021 broke the record for rare Pokémon cards by fetching $55,000 at auction. In addition to the record sum, the card’s illustration. Which was by legendary artist Mitsuhiro Arita – who has been creating Pokémon cards for more than 20 years – also made it genuinely one-of-a-kind due to his signature.

This concludes my list for now. Within this list, we have focused on the Pokémon cards that are considered to be the most valuable. Rare and valuable Pokémon cards are either printed in limited quantities or exclusively distributed through events or opportunities.

The craze surrounding Pokémon trading cards is insane. It is easy to understand why there has been such a dramatic increase in interest in the pastime given that some cards are valued at more than $300,000 each.

Learning about premium Pokémon cards is one of the best movements you can make as a collector. Researching the world’s rarest Pokémon cards is beneficial, even if you can’t obtain them all.. The most difficult-to-find Pokémon cards typically command the highest prices.
